Indirect Lighting Ideas with Crown Moulding

Want to incorporate indirect lighting into your home but aren’t sure where to start? Orac Decor by Outwater has you covered.

Cove Moulding + LED Light Strips = Beautiful Indirect Lighting Effects

Orac Decor’s Modern Crown Moulding profiles are designed with a cavity in the back where you can insert a strip of Low Voltage LED Lights. To keep the LED ribbon straight and eliminate the possibility of an undesirable “scalloping” effect, we recommend inserting it in a Light Channel with Diffuser/Lens. You can place this extrusion directly inside the cavity or mount it to the wall.

Alternatively, you can simply tape the LED strip to your surface, if you decide not to use a U-channel extrusion. Outwater offers LED Strips with 3M Adhesive Backing.

How Do I Choose the Right LEDs for My Crown Molding?

The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. Most people prefer higher lumens in a large crown moulding such as the one pictured above. As a general rule:

2 inch wide crowns = 300 lumens per foot

4 inch wide crowns = 600 lumens per foot

6 inch wide crowns = 800 lumens per foot

PRO TIP: You can always add a dimmer to adjust the brightness in your room.

Uplighting or Downlighting?

Depending on preference, you can position the crown moulding to project uplighting, direct lighting, OR downlighting. Uplighting & Direct Lighting are more common for a ceiling application. Downlighting is a popular choice for skirting/baseboard trim and headboards.

Set the Mood!

Indirect lighting provides a warm, inviting atmosphere, and enhances the look of interior architecture with interesting interplay between light and shadow.

With a cove moulding, low voltage LED ribbon, and tape or an extrusion, you can instantly add a modern design and stunning lighting effect anywhere in your home.
